Gillett FFA 2016-2017 Officer Applications
A FFA officer position is a great show of your leadership skills and initiative to serve others. Here are the important details to know regarding running for an officer position.
- A completed application AND resume are due on April 29 to Ms. Claflin at the end of the school day. Example resumes are available from Ms. Claflin.
- Please create a 1-page 8.5×11 biography sheet to turn in with your application. These will be shared with the nominating committee and chapter members by placing on the wall outside the Ag room. It should include the following:
- Your name
- Your current grade
- A picture of yourself
- Answers to the following questions:
- Why I want to serve as a Gillett FFA Officer?
- Why do you think others should join FFA?
- Favorite FFA memory?
- Other sports, extracurricular activities, jobs?
- What is your Supervised Agricultural Experience program?
- If you could be any piece of farm equipment, what would you be and why?
- After you submit your materials, you will be interviewed by a nominating committee consisting of FFA Alumni members and retiring officers on a date to be determined. This is an approximately 10-minute interview that lets the committee get to know you better. You need official dress for this.
- You will find out if you received an officer position prior to the FFA banquet. However, the positions of the new officer team will be a surprise until revealed at the banquet on May 20.
Timeline
- Applications/resume/posters due to Ms. Claflin – April 29
- Chapter voting – May 2-6 (it will be a blind ballot, but each member has to give Ms. Claflin their ballots in a sealed envelope and check-in to prevent multiple ballots per member)
- Interviews with nominating committee – TBD
- Results of election process – Week prior to banquet
- Announcement of officers – May 20 at banquet

For FFA members that were active all 4 years of high school, please check out the Gillett FFA Alumni Scholarship.
Application is due Friday April 22nd, 2016. Please hand them into Ms. Claflin no later than 3:15 on Friday.

Fair Updates
MAQA training scheduled for Saturday, April 30 – Washington Middle School, Oconto Falls, 2:30-4:00 p.m. Registration is due by April 15th. You can register by calling the Oconto County UW-Extension Office (920) 834-6845. Space is limited!
o The Swine &Sheep Projects Weigh-in for 2016 County Fair will be Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Oconto County Fairgrounds in Gillett from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. If you have any questions, please contact Chris Engebretsen at 715.373.3799.
Fairest of the Fair Applications
Serving as Fairest is a wonderful and extremely rewarding experience. The contestant chosen as Oconto County Fairest of the Fair will not only serve as hostess of the 2016 Fair, but will also work with the Fair Board and the Junior Fairest of the Fair to promote the fair throughout the year by attending various community events.
The contest will be held on Saturday, April 9th at the Gillett High School. The day will begin with individual interviews, lunch with the judges; group interviews, a reception open to friends, family, and sponsors, and will conclude with judging and questions on stage, also open to the public. The contest is open to legal residents of Oconto County who have been a resident for at least one year or are from a neighboring county and the majority of their school and fair activities are performed in Oconto County.

The Beef Project Weigh-in for 2016 County Fair will be Saturday, March 19, 2016 at the Oconto County Fairgrounds in Gillett from10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m. If in case of inclement weather on March 19, weigh-in will be held on Sunday, March 20 at the Oconto County Fairgrounds in Gillett from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
The Swine/Sheep/Goat Projects Weigh-in for 2016 County Fair will be Saturday, April 30, 2016 at the Oconto County Fairgrounds in Gillett from 10:00 a.m. until 11:00 a.m.
Oconto County Fair Youth Livestock Meeting
Oconto County Fair Youth Livestock Project committee members and all junior fair beef, swine, and sheep project members/families are invited to meet Monday, January 25 at 7:30 p.m. at the Gillett Public Library meeting room. (Meeting room is in the former BMO Bank building next to the library.) The purpose of the meeting is to gather input from exhibitor families in these three departments in preparation for developing a two-year premium book for the 2016 and 2017 fairs. Input is invited on exhibit classes to add, change, or delete, general and department rules and requirements. Input received will be considered by the fair board, which must approve changes. If unable to participate in this meeting, suggestions can be forwarded before January 25 to Ken Harter at kharter@plbb.us or mailed to him at Oconto County Fair, PO Box 6, Oconto Falls, WI 54154. The schedule and preliminary planning for the Performance Project weigh-on will be set at this time. For further questions on this meeting, please contact Ken Harter (920)-846-2046.
Educational Points Requirements for Oconto County Fair

For students who are planning on showing animals at the fair and need to attend a MAQA training: Just a reminder a MAQA session will be held this Saturday, January 9th at Washington Middle School in Oconto Falls starting at 8am. Seating is limited and you should reserve your spot if you are planning to attend. Please see Ms. Claflin for more details.
Gillett FFA Members Amplify Skills at National FFA Convention
Hanna B., Logan D. and Jacob T., Gillett FFA members attended the 88th National FFA Convention and Expo in Louisville, Kentucky October 28-31, 2015.
“Amplify” is the theme for this year’s convention and expo. “With the opportunities we are given in our lives, we must take action and share the message of agriculture with others,” said 2015-16 National FFA President Andy Paul, a student at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College in Georgia. “It’s time we all amplify our voice when it comes to the message of agriculture, and boost our impact.”
Students attended general sessions with keynote speaker Rick Rigsby during the opening sessions on Oct. 28. On Friday morning, past state FFA officer Amberley Snyder will share her message with FFA members on how she overcame adversity. They engaged with more than 450 corporations, organizations and colleges at the expo.
Jacob T., served as one of 475 delegates at convention after being selected by the Wisconsin Association of FFA in June. He served on the committee for Enhancing Leadership Development Opportunities for All Members that made recommendations for the National FFA Board of Directors.
Gillett FFA advisor, Kellie Claflin, served as a panelist for the Teach Ag workshop, one of 70 leadership workshops available for members, that encouraged FFA members to become agricultural educators.
FFA members toured industry destinations, including Miller Park to learn about turfgrass and landscaping, Corvette assembly plant and museum, Mammoth Cave National Park and Ozark Fish Hatchery to learn more about agriculture.
The National FFA Organization provides leadership, personal growth and career success training through agricultural education to 629,367 student members who belong to one of 7,757 local FFA chapters throughout the U.S., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands.
